Our Story

Hi! We are Ruan & Marike Botha, the hands & heart behind Papillon Organic Farm. We purchased the farm in 2022 from the previous owners, who started farming with organic vegetables in 2006. Our interest in organic farming began with a question: how can we help? We were struck by the problems in Africa: unemployment, poverty and food insecurity - and South Africa is no exception. Then we discovered market gardening. This model relies on manual labour and ancient farming methods to produce nutrient-dense, organic food with minimal input costs. The bonus: farming that is good for the environment, and good for our health. It seemed too good to be true, so we set out to try it ourselves at Papillon Organic Farm. While we do not have it all figured out yet, we are so grateful to be on this farm, contributing to our community, and to be surrounded by so many happy, healthy plants.

What We Do

We grow vegetables organically - free of chemicals & pesticides
We foster a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem for natural plant health
We employ 25 full time staff members from the Humansdorp area
We supply to supermarkets and restaurants from Gqeberha - Knysna
We grow lettuce, baby vegetables, herbs and edible flowers
We built a farmstall out of rocks, mud and grass! it’s still standing!
We sell our fresh produce and farm-to-table meals in our farm shop
We host events and farm tours
We plant over 15,000 seedlings every single week
We sometimes answer the phone, but sometimes we are picking flowers
We make our own compost and worm tea
We don’t kill our spiders - they eat our pests
We sell free-range eggs from our healthy, happy chickens
We make a great cappuccino
